Common pests
The most common pests that exterminators are asked to perfom pest control on are ants, mice, flies, termites, mosquitoes, cockroaches, fleas,
rats, spiders, crickets, ticks, bed bugs. Johannesburg residents may find their homes being taken over by these pests and as such, will need to call in professional pest control
services to remove the bugs from the household.
Advice:
Avoid open garbage. The city of Johannesburg is prone to pests breeding in garbage, such as ants, maggots, cockroaches, parktown prawns, and rats.
Seal unused food in the kitchen - this invites insects such as ants and cockroaches to make a home here.
Fix leaking roofs, or any open water source for that matter. It is a well known fact that leakages lead to excessive mosquito breeding. While mosquitoes maye
not be entirely avoidable in Johannesburg, they can be controlled.
Clean yard debris - grass cuttings, leaves, etc. Pests such as maggots, cockroaches, fleas, ticks, spiders, crickets, flies, and ants thrive on garden refuse
and an unkept garden.
Termites / Wood borers in Johannesburg
Woodborer or also Cryptotermis Brevis will bore a tunnel into suitable
soft woods, including roof trusses, knotty pine ceilings and furniture.
Next, the wood borers will create a tunnel network, it is this tunnel
network that will weaken your timber structure. While wood borer is not as big a problem in the
city of Johannesburg as it is in other more humid regions, if left untreated, they can wreak havoc on
even the strongest built wooden frameworks. Borer will lie dormant for many of the colder months in Joburg; from April to September there
will be practically no signs of your house or wooden furniture being infested by these pests. Humidity and warmer weather, however, trigger
the borer eggs to hatch, leading to the termite insects we then see flying around the house, ceilings, or roof tops outside.
Inspections in Johannesburg
If you suspect that your house is infested by a pest, an inspection will be required to determine whether a property is in fact infested by
insects. This insepction is known in the industry as an entomologist's inspection. Joburg Contractors lists companies who are highly trained professionals
possessing vast knowledge in entomology (the study of insects).
